Mount Kilimanjaro
Dr Simon Bagley
Dr Simon Bagley is a GP in Dunbar, East Lothian and is married to Sue Bagley, The Lead Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department. In October, he plans to climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise funds for the Medic One Trust.
The trek will take him through many different terrains including forest, moorland, desert and finally the ice-capped summit.
The trek will take one week and the route is as follows:
- Day 1 : Machame Gate to Machame Camp
6,000 ft to 10,200 ft (18km/5-7 hrs)
Habitat: Montane Forest - Day 2 : Machame Camp to Shira Camp
10,200 ft to 12,600 ft (9km/ 4-6hrs)
Habitat: Moorland - Day 3 : Shira Camp-Lava Tower-Barranco
12,600 ft to 12,700 ft (15km/5-7hrs)
Habitat: Semi-desert - Day 4 : Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
12,700 ft to 13,800 ft (7km/4hrs)
Habitat: Alpine Desert Day 5 : Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
13,800 ft to 15,100 ft (6km/4hrs)
Habitat: Alpine Desert- Day 6 : Barafu Camp to Summit
15,100 ft to 19,300 ft (7km ascent/6-8hrs)
